About EMAL
EMAL (Emirates Aluminium Company Limited) is a strategic joint venture between aluminium producer DUBAL (Dubai Aluminium) and Abu Dhabi investment vehicle MUBADALA.
The joint venture was established in 2007 under the leadership of HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, by Emiri Decree Number 7 of 2007.
The project – the construction of a new hi-tech aluminium smelter in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi – is making history by being the largest green-field aluminium smelter project ever, and the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas sector. This USD 5.7 billion development is the flagship project of Abu Dhabi’s industrialization and diversification strategy.
Located in the new Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone, the project will be built in two phases. By the end of the first phase in April 2010, the smelter will produce 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per year, doubling to 1.4 million tonnes annually at the end of phase two, making it the worlds largest single-site aluminium smelter in the world, and making EMAL the fifth largest aluminium producer in the world.
EMAL’s construction signals a continuing shift in global aluminium production to the Middle East, and its state-of-the-art facility will raise the bar for industrial projects worldwide. This new initiative will generate long-term economic benefits for the UAE, offer both Emiratis and expatriates the chance to develop careers in a wide range of disciplines, be a catalyst for downstream processing, and create significant economic value for generations to come.
