Aluminium is the metal of the future. EMAL is the metal producer of the future.
Aluminium is a product of increasing demand and importance. It is strong, lightweight and fully recyclable. From cars to aircraft, windows to medical equipment, aluminium is an integral part of our everyday lives.
Global demand for the metal is expected to be around 50 million metric tonnes by 2010 and to reach 60 million metric tonnes within a decade. When operational, EMAL will be able to make a significant contribution to that global demand.
The company’s facility at Taweelah, halfway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will produce high-grade semi-finished aluminium products for a wide variety of industrial and domestic applications. A new port will facilitate raw material delivery, and an on-site gas-fired 2,000MW powerplant will ensure a long-term energy supply.
The facility will use a high level of automation and DUBAL’s UAE-development DX reduction cell, technology. The technology significantly reduces the amount of energy needed to produce the metal, reducing costs and increasing production capacity. The smelter will comprise 756 “pots”, or reduction cells, in two potlines.
The smelter’s cast house will have flexibility to produce primary aluminium extrusion billets, sheet ingots and high-purity unalloyed aluminium available in different ingot shapes and sizes.
Such products will supply the aerospace, automotive, technology, packaging and construction industries. EMAL will also be a key supplier of high-grade products to the electronic components industry.
