What led you to recruitment from your background in Policing?

With the Policing reforms being implemented in the UK 4 years ago, it was no longer the career that it was before. I had to reflect on what I was good at and what I enjoyed. I knew I was good with people, I knew I was well trained in interview techniques and I knew I liked to be proactive in the way I work, I thought those things lent themselves well to recruitment and after speaking with friends of mine in the industry I made the transition and never looked back.

Why did you join PageGroup?

Apart from the obvious stability and security in joining a global listed business. I liked that the way they work in a more consultative way. Other agencies tend to be very transactional and there is a huge focus on making money and filling roles. I like that the consultants here are not paid commission based on what they bill. There is a much more consultative and professional approach which suits me very well.

What is most rewarding about your job?

I manage the digital practice for the Middle East which is an area of change and growth at the moment. Helping clients navigate the digital space and assisting them in setting up their business for success is very rewarding. Especially when we partner to build out full teams, I get a very real sense that I have contributed to their business success and not just filled a role.

What skills from your background helped with your transition into recruitment?

Policing teaches you many things, apart from receiving arguably the best interview training that exists in any industry, which helps immensely when screening candidates; you learn to read people well, build rapport, manage pressure and prioritise workload, all skills which I feel are vital to be a successful recruiter.

What advice would you give someone with a Police background who wanted a job in recruitment?

Well, it was the best move I ever made. I am particularly passionate about digital and had exposure to that space before recruiting. My advice would be to find an area of business which interests you, upskill in that area via online learning or part time courses and then be willing to work hard and stay focused, the rewards speak for themselves.
